Iowa Caucuses, and ONE.org’s “on the record”

Posted by Benjamin on: 01.03.2008 /

As you are no doubt aware, today is the first in the nation caucus, the beginning of the United States’ primary election cycle for the 2008 presidential election.

Here are the results from our own little poll, which has been running for a little while now over in the right sidebar:

The question: If the primary election were held today, who would you vote for?

There were a total of 28 votes. They broke down like this:

ONE.org has a really kewl web site with the candidates answers to several justice and compassion related questions about how they plan to combat extreme poverty and global disease. Sadly, only two of the seven Republican candidates chose to answer ONE.org’s questions, while only one of the seven Democratic candidates failed to answer their questions. Fortunately, ONE.org has managed to extrapolate answers from the public record for some of the candidates who did not choose to formally respond to their request. On ONE’s web site, you can compare up to three of the 14 candidates positions on issues like:

-Do you agree with ONE that in electing a new U.S. president we have a big opportunity to help MTWABP over the next four years? Why or Why not?

-Are you excited about any of the candidates? Who and why, or why not?

Benjamin, I do agree with the ONE Campaign’s optimism. This is the first time in decades that combating poverty has been a big election issue. I like what Jim Wallis says about politics…Politicians will always lick their finger and stick it up in the air to see which way the wind is blowing. We can’t stop politicians from putting their fingers in the air. But we can change the way the wind is blowing.

The Religious Right pushed their agenda for 30 years and they got candidates elected and legislation passed. It’s time for progressive people of faith and conscience to lift up a powerful voice as well. And I really believe that this is happening and I’m excited about it!
