Lois and Mary, two of our International Workers, oversee the Sustainable Village Health Care project in Papua Indonesia. Many of these tribes live too far from urban centres to receive necessary care. In these tribes it is not uncommon for women to bear 10 children, yet see only half of these children reach adulthood. This is most often caused by complications in childbirth, poor nutrition and lack of medical assistance. Prenatal education and medical care are needed to reduce the extremely high rates of infant and maternal deaths in this people group. One key initiative is to train women in midwifery techniques and provide the means to travel into the remote villages to assist women in childbirth.
